Rogue turned and tried not to let Storms comment eat at her but it did. She was stupid for putting her best friend in that kind of danger. She just couldn't go back in there and face Pyro again. So she made her way up to the roof and just stood there in the dark looking up at the stars. She had to get herself together so that she can help John come back to the Xmen where he belonged. Or maybe he didn't. She was so confused and conflicted. John and Jubes were not waring in her head like she thought they would they were quiet. It helped to think. But she just looked up to the stars as she sat on the edge of the roof and looked for the answer in the silent night sky.
She slowly looked down at her gloved hand and wondered at all she had lost to her xgene. Sliding the glove off she looked at the skin of her hand and couldn't help but feel her skin was a traitor against her.
Then suddenly Jubes popped up in her mind and went on about how it had saved her and john only a few days ago. And that they never would have met if not for her gift.
John grudgingly agreed in her mind. Not that he didn't think her gift was powerful but he just wasn't the agreeing type.
CREEK...
Rogue heard the door to the roof open. She smelled the cigar smoke before she even turned. Seeing Logan made her cheeks burn. And she saw the relief on his face as they locked eyes. The cigar was clinched in his hand and she saw that he had been worried. "Rogue! I've been trackin you down for an hour kid! What the hell ya doin up here after being sick?" He growled at her and she couldn't help but retort.
"Don't you mean sniffin me out, Logan?" she thumbed her nose and smiled at his gruff direct approach to her absence. Logan was the only one that wouldn't treat her different when her powers were back. She could always count on him to be his gruff self.
"Yeah real funny now get the hell away from the edge of the roof 'for I drag you down to the mess hall!" he gave another gravely growl.
She could tell he didn't like her so close to the edge. So she rolled her eyes and swong her legs over and then remembered her glove. Slipping it on she got hit with another reason he would never ...
"Rogue?" His voice lost that growl. It was curious.
No she couldn't think like that anymore. He had already made it very clear. "Never mind, I was just a thinkin..." She clenched her gloved hands and stood.
"Rogue... about earlier..."
Her eyes flicked up to his and she saw him looking just as rugged and painfully handsome as always. She felt her heart clench and speed up. "What?" she breathed the word in fear. No this is not what she wanted she wanted it to disappear go away vanish! "I'm hungry I'm gonna go to the kitchen." She went to move to the door but Logan stopped her by blocking it.
"Sorry Rogue no runnin now..." his voice was serious. "You need to hear what I gotta say. You may not be a kid anymore but you're not as grown as you think girl." His voice reminded her of a glass of whiskey clinking with ice surrounded by cigar smoke that is sweet and tangy. Mentally shaking herself she backed up a step rallying herself for her rebuttal.
"I'm 19 and I'm graduating in a few weeks! Storm even asked me to stay and help the teachers after! I'm a fully trained Xman and I can-" She was hushed up by the fact that Logan swiftly grabbed her covered wrist and put his knuckles up against her ribs with his other hand.
"This is me making a point. If I was yer enemy I'd of gutted you by now. You are not fully trained till I say so kid." His gray eyes froze her and burned her up all at once. His voice was rough velvet, and his breath smelled of sweet tangy cigar smoke and top shelf whiskey. Intoxicating. Damn her burning cheeks. She wanted to look away or snarl some great comeback but she was froze to the spot and speechless.
"You need to understand another thing Rogue..." he brought his naked hand up to nearly touch her cheek and stopped, "Your mutation, it wouldn't stop a man that really had a mind to side step it darlin..." Her eyes flicked up to his seeing his realization that he had slipped up and let the endearment slip out. So he set his jaw and replied, "You need to be with a man your own age. Not a man like me, you deserve better." He had to force himself to let her wrist go.
It occurred to Rogue that he never said he didn't feel anything for her. Just that he thought she should be with a better man. "No one is better than you." she said more to herself than him but her slip up hit a cord with him. He stepped back and looked away.
"Look kid, it ain't gonna work. I'm more animal than man sometimes and I've got more blood on these hands then you could imagine..." he let that statement hang in the air. Which was still with possibility...
